Why do Christians describe the Holy Spirit as their Helper, Teacher and guide?

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is ‘the Helper’. The Bible also says that the Holy Spirit is a teacher and guide.

The Bible explains that with the powerful help of the Holy Spirit Christians learn and grow to be more like Jesus; to think, feel and act like him; to be more peaceful, patient and kind. (2 Corinthians 3: 18).

Here are some Bible verses that describe the work of the Holy Spirit:

  1. The Holy Spirit teaches Christians God’s ways (1 Corinthians 2: 9-12).
  2. The Holy Spirit teaches Christians that they belong to God (Romans 8: 16).
  3. The Holy Spirit enables Christians to do the things God wants them to do (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11).
  4. The Holy Spirit helps Christians tell others the good news (Acts 1:8).
  5. The Holy Spirit helps Christians understand and remember Jesus’ teachings (John 14:26).
  6. The Holy Spirit guides Christians to the truth (John 16:13).
  7. The Holy Spirit puts God’s love in the hearts of Christians (Romans 5:5).
  8. When the Holy Spirit is at work, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control grow in a person's life (Galatians 5:22).

Why does the Old Testament teach that the Holy Spirit came upon people?

The Bible teaches that during Old Testament times the Holy Spirit came upon people to give them power to do jobs they couldn’t do on their own.

The Bible teaches that God gave some people jobs that were too difficult for them to do on their own. God knew that they couldn’t do the jobs alone so he sent his Holy Spirit to be with them. When the Holy Spirit came upon them he gave them power to do the jobs they needed to do; he gave them the power to do something that they couldn’t do on their own.The Bible tells us that they were empowered by the Holy Spirit.

In the Old Testament we read that the Holy Spirit came upon Bezalel (Exodus 31:1–5), Moses (Numbers 11:25), Samson (Judges 15:13–14) and King Saul (1 Samuel 10:9–11). The Holy Spirit empowered them to do different ‘jobs’.

In the book of Zechariah, God’s message to Zerubbabel was that he would finish the Temple not by his own might nor by his own power but by God’s Spirit. God was promising Zerubbabel that his Holy Spirit would help him to finish the Temple. The Holy Spirit would empower Zerubbabel. Using his own power or even working with other people Zerubbabel wouldn’t be able to finish the Temple, he needed God’s help; he needed the power of the Holy Spirit.

Today Christians believe that, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to be with Christians in a new way - he no longer just empowers a few people; he comes and lives in Christians, he works powerfully in their lives and he is with them all the time.

Why did God send the Holy Spirit to live with people?

Christians understand that by becoming more and more like Jesus, they will grow to live God's way.

But people can’t change themselves to be like Jesus. They can’t make themselves perfectly peaceful, patient and kind.

The Bible teaches that God knows exactly what people need to learn and grow to be like Jesus. Christians believe that God knows about people’s difficulties and troubles. Just as a craftsman knows what is needed to get a job done God knows exactly the help and guidance people need to become more and more like Jesus. He has the perfect answer. God’s answer is the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost, The Holy Spirit came down

However the Holy Spirit is much better than a tool or an object that a craftsman might use to get a job done. The Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of God. He is God. He is real and living. He is good, wise and powerful.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit works in people's lives changing them from the inside-out to become more and more like Jesus; to be more peaceful, patient and kind. As the Holy Spirit helps Christians become more like Jesus, more and more they are able to live God's way.

Why do Christians say 'when Jesus went up the Holy Spirit came down'?

Christians believe that the Holy Spirit lives with people here on earth. They believe that wherever they are, whatever they are doing, the Holy Spirit is with them. A bit like the wind, people cannot see the Holy Spirit, but Christians believe he is with people, everyday, everywhere.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit came to be with people over 2,000 years ago. The Bible tells us that when Jesus went up to Heaven the Holy Spirit came down to earth to live with people in a new way.

In the Bible we read about Jesus going back up to Heaven. Christians call this Jesus' ascension. Christians call the day the Holy Spirit came down from Heaven the Day of Pentecost. The Day of Pentecost took place ten days after Jesus' ascension, which is why Christians say… when Jesus went up the Holy Spirit came down.

Why do Christians talk about friendship with the Holy Spirit?

Christians believe that they can be friends with the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that, like a friend, the Holy Spirit comes along-side Christians; he shares what he has with them and encourages them to share their lives with him too.

Christians believe they can spend time with the Holy Spirit; they can listen to him, learn from him and enjoy being with him.

Because Christians believe that the Holy Spirit is good, powerful and wise they believe it truly wonderful that he comes along-side them; they think it is truly wonderful that they can be friends with the Holy Spirit.
