September_The Bible

Yr.2

'Every scripture is God breathed…' 2 Timothy 3:16a
World English Bible (WEB)

Week 1
Objective: To discover that the Bible is made up of 66 books and includes  books about God's law, history books, poetry books, books written by God's prophets, the Gospels and letters.

Underline the word ‘Scripture’ in the verse. Explain that ‘Scripture’ is another name for the Bible. To a Christian ‘Scripture’ means everything written in the Bible.
Talk about how a long time ago people began to write down what God had done for them. They also wrote down things God told them and they made up songs to Him and about Him. Hold up two of the paper-back books and explain that the things people wrote were copied into books. Eventually (after around 1500 years) there were 66 books all about God: story books, poetry books, instruction books and letters.  The books were put together in one big book; we call the book The Bible. Remind the children that ‘The Bible’ means books.
Today there are millions of Bibles all around the world, some have different words in but they all mean the same.

Week 2
Objective: To discover that the Bible is from God. God guided the writers and showed them by His Holy Spirit what He wanted them to write.

Underline the word ‘breathed’ in the verse. Remind the children that last week we learnt that ‘Scripture’ means everything written in the Bible. Explain that in this verse Paul tells Timothy something really important about the Scriptures. He tells him that every scripture is God-breathed. Ask the children if they know what that might mean.
Talk about how our breath comes from deep inside us. What Paul was saying is that everything written in the Bible is from God. People wrote the words down but God guided the writers and showed them by His Holy Spirit what He wanted them to write. Christians believe that the Bible is a very special work of the Holy Spirit and it says exactly what God wants it to say. As Christians are so sure that what the Bible says is what God says, they call the Bible ‘God’s Word’ or ‘The Word of God’. Ask the children if they have heard the Bible called this before.
Talk briefly about God revealing Who He is and what He is like through the Bible. Just as we might describe to someone what we are like in a letter or an email, Christians believe the Bible is God’s way of telling people about Himself. Christians believe that through the Bible, God is telling people about His goodness, His power and His wisdom, what He likes and doesn’t like.  Because Christians believe that the Bible is from and about God they read it and remember what it says so that they can learn and understand more about God, His great power and His love.

Week 3
Objective: To discover that Christians believe reading the whole Bible helps them understand the big picture of Who God is, what He has done and how He is able to work in people's lives today.

Christians believe it is important to read the whole Bible to find out all about God. They believe that it is important to find out what is in the whole Bible so they can see the big picture of Who God is, what He has done and how He is able to work in people’s lives today. Like a jigsaw puzzle, Christians believe many parts of the Bible make more sense when they see how the rest fits together. Briefly remind the children that last week we learnt that Christians believe that if they ask God the Holy Spirit to be with them when they listen to or read the Bible He will bring the stories and the writing ‘alive’. Just as the Holy Spirit did a special work with the people that wrote the Bible, Christians believe He will do a special work when people read it too.

Week 4
Objective:  To discover that the Bible is like a plumb-line; Christians check they are living God's way by looking in the Bible and asking the Holy Spirit to be with them when they read it.

Talk about how Christians want to make sure they are living the way God wants them to live. The Bible is like a plumb-line to Christians. Because Christians believe the Bible is God’s word and it is impossible for God to lie they believe the Bible is always right and true. Like a plumb-line shows a builder a true and straight line, the Bible shows Christians how to live God’s way. Christians check they are living God's way by looking in the Bible and asking the Holy Spirit to be with them as they read it.
If you have time, with older children you might want to talk briefly about Christians not always agreeing on every part of the Bible. Although Christians believe that the Bible is God’s Word, sometimes they have different thoughts and ideas about what parts of the Bible mean. When Christians read some parts of the Bible, some think God is saying one thing and others think He is saying something else. Explain that Christians might not agree on the meaning of every verse, but it is important to remember that there are many parts of the Bible that Christians do agree on and believe to be clear. Here are four examples:

1. Jesus is God the Son
2. Jesus lived, died and rose again so that we can become close friends with God
3. People who have said ‘Yes’ to God’s love and forgiveness are Christians
4. God’s way of living is to love Him and love others.
