Week 5 objectives: to learn the Bible verse and recap what the children have looked at over the last few weeks.
Game - 7 mins
Aim: to play a game that involves putting the words of the Bible verse in order.
You will need: plain white A4 paper and masking tape.
Before the session write the Bible verse on the A4 pieces of paper. Write one word on each sheet. Scrunch up the paper making sure the writing is on the inside of each paper ball. In addition you will need approximately four more paper sheets per participating child. Scrunch up the extra A4 sheets. Stick a long strip of masking tape across the centre of your teaching space.
During the session divide the children into two teams. Ask one team to stand on one side of the strip of tape and the other team to stand on the other side. Give half of the scrunched up balls to one team and the other half to the other team. Explain to the children that they are going to have a snowball fight. They need to throw their scrunched up pieces of paper over the tape and onto the side of the opposite team. The team with the least number of ‘snowballs’ on their side after two minutes of play is the winning team. Ask the teams to swap sides then play the game again.
If you have less than four children set up some small cuddly toys or plastic cups on a low bench or upturned cardboard box and encourage the children to try and knock them off with the ‘snowballs’.
Talk about - 5 mins
You will need: sticky tac, a large sheet of paper or a whiteboard, marker pens and a second large sheet of paper.
Before the session write the verse on the whiteboard or a large sheet of paper. Use sticky tac to stick a second large sheet of paper over the verse.
Ask the children to sit in a circle. Place all the snowballs in the centre. Encourage the children to pick up the snowballs and un-scrunch them. If the paper has writing on it they should place it in front of them, if it is blank they should scrunch it back up and place it behind them, outside of the circle. Once all the snowballs have been un-scrunched the words of the verse should be in the centre of the circle.
Ask the children to pick up a word-sheet and hold it up so that everyone can read it. Encourage the children to swap the sheets around until they are in the correct order. If necessary reveal the verse you covered up at the beginning of the session. When all the sheets are in the correct order read the verse out loud pointing to each word as you say it.
’Give me five’ - 2 mins
Before the session prepare four statements summarising what the children have learnt over the last few weeks. For an overview of the month’s objectives click on the relevant verse below.
Ask the children to ‘high five’ the person next to them and say ‘give me five!’.
Encourage the children to point to their little finger with their other hand and shout ‘one’. Tell the children the first statement, summarising what they learnt in week one then ask the children to repeat the statement back to you.
Encourage the children to point to their next finger and shout ‘two’. Tell the children the second statement, summarising what they learnt in week two then ask the children to repeat the second statement back to you.
Repeat this with the middle and index fingers telling the children the third and fourth statements. Finally encourage the children to point to their thumbs, give a ‘thumbs up’ and say ‘God loves me!’
Song - 1 min
Sing this months’ Bible verse song.
